In the mid-2000s, Megan Fox was considered Hollywood’s big star, the hottest woman alive, and even “the new Angelina Jolie.” But suddenly, in 2010, she disappeared. Recently, a serious Megan Fox resurgence has begun, and the talented and courageous actress is everywhere.
From starring in new films, such as Till Death, to attending events hand in hand with her new boy-toy, Machine Gun Kelly, Fox is officially back. What made Megan retreat into the shadows in the 2010s? What has she been doing for the past decade or so, and what convinced her to step back into the limelight?
How It All Began
Megan Fox was born to Gloria and Franklin Fox on May 16th, 1986. She grew up in Rockwood, Tennessee, and her middle name is Denise. When the future star was three, her parents divorced, leaving her and her sister to be brought up by their mom and stepdad, Tony Tonachio.
Megan’s mother was “very strictly Pentecostal,” and Megan had a stern upbringing. They weren’t allowed to date or have friends over and were sent to a Christian school. Megan’s time at school wasn’t easy. She was unpopular and forced to eat lunch in a bathroom stall to avoid bullies.
One of the Guys
In a 2009 interview with Cosmo Girl, Megan shared, “I just hated school, period… I’ve never been a big believer in formal education… Everyone hated me, and I was a total outcast. My friends were always guys. I have a very aggressive personality, and girls didn’t like me for that. I’ve had only one great girlfriend my whole life.”
From the age of five, Megan attended dance classes and continued dancing even after moving to Florida when she was ten. At age thirteen, Fox began her modeling career and, just two years later, was cast in her first movie role.
Holiday in the Sun
Megan Fox’s debut role was in Holiday in the Sun in 2001, as the stuck-up, rich girl, Brianna Wallace. The film was a Mary Kate and Ashley movie, and Megan played the Olsons’ worst enemy. At seventeen, Megan tested for her high school diploma early and moved to Los Angeles.
In the early 2000s, she mostly played minor roles in TV series like Two and a Half Men, Ocean Ave., and What I Like About You. She then scored the part of the “spoiled daughter” in The Help and the popular, ditzy daughter in Hope & Faith.
Bad Boys on the Set of Bad Boys
In 2003, Megan appeared in an uncredited role in the film Bad Boys II. She played a kid dancing under a waterfall but later shared that she hadn’t exactly been treated like the kid she was. The movie was shot in 2002 when Megan was just sixteen.
Despite her age, she was asked by the director Michael Bay to “dance sexually in a bikini under a waterfall.” Megan felt over-sexualized on the set of the film and often shared the uncomfortable anecdote in interviews. However, back then, most fans seemed to find it amusing.
Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen
Fox’s next significant role was in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, opposite Lindsey Lohan. Lohan starred as a dramatic teen aspiring to become a Broadway actress, and Fox played her arch-nemesis, Carla. The role of Carla cemented Megan as a spoiled, popular girl.
Megan later shared, “When I was a teenager, all those little movies I was doing with Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, and then Lindsay Lohan… that was essentially the exact same character. All of my lines were interchangeable.”
Hope & Faith
When Megan was eighteen, she was still acting in Hope & Faith. One day Brian Austin Green, from Beverly Hills 90210, guest-starred in the series, and Megan became smitten with him, despite their 12-year age gap.
She didn’t recognize him as David Silver; instead, she thought he looked “sweet and quiet.” Megan explained, “I was like… I have to be with you. You’re not a threat [who is] going to cause a lot of problems.” Because of their age difference, Megan had to convince him she was “responsible” and “well-spoken.”
Brian Austin Green
For Megan, meeting Brian was love at first sight. She shared, “he accidentally grazed my leg with his hand. I felt an electric shock go through my body, so I figured that meant something.” So, Fox sworked her magic and charmed the older star, and soon they were an item.
In 2006, the couple announced that they were engaged. Nevertheless, Megan and Brian were still constantly forced to defend their love because of their off-putting age difference. It was even rumored in 2009 that they’d called off the engagement.
Her Big Transformation
In 2007, Megan Fox got her fundamental break-out role in Transformers, which propelled her out of the spoiled teenager stereotype into an international sex symbol. In the comic-book-based action flick, Megan played Mikaela Banes, the female lead and romantic interest of Sam Witwicky, Shia LaBeouf’s character.
The media went wild for Megan and declared her the hottest thing since Angelina Jolie and the sexiest woman alive. She was considered Hollywood’s newest brunette bombshell: a good girl gone bad, complete with the tattoos and spunky attitude to match.
The Bling Ring
While Megan was at the peak of her mid-2000s stardom, she was targeted by the Bling Ring. The Bling Ring was a group of teenage robbers from the Valley who would target famous actresses and models they liked and steal their clothing and other possessions.
The group stole some of Megan and Brian’s things, including a firearm, and took much more from stars like Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan. In 2013, Sophia Coppola directed a film about The Bling Ring group starring Emma Watson and Taissa Farminga.
How to Lose Friends & Alienate People
In 2008, Megan starred in the film How to Lose Friends & Alienate People. Her star was on the rise; she couldn’t leave the house without being trailed by paparazzi. Once, she arrived late at an interview for Elle Magazine after being followed by “20 paps.”
Megan apologized and explained, “I tried to lose them, but they’re out back.” She might have been dubbed earth’s hottest girl, but she became known for her mouth. Megan was known to curse, brag, blab, and burn bridges. She was on her way to Lose Friends & Alienate People herself.
Revenge of the Fallen
After the success of the first Transformers movie with Megan’s award-winning performance, she was cast in the film’s two sequels. In 2009, Fox starred in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen but didn’t exactly have fun with Michael Bay on set.
She got along well with her costar Shia LaBeouf who called her “one of the guys” and said Fox “isn’t scared or intimidated by anything.” While LaBeouf is “one of [Megan’s] favorite people on the planet,” Bay can be more of a dictator than a director, in her opinion.
Megan Fox’s Bikini Body
Before shooting Revenge of the Fallen, Megan appeared in the Diablo Cody and Karyn Kusama movie, Jennifer’s Body. Jennifer’s Body is a horror flick about a cheerleader named Jennifer, who, after being sacrificed by devil worshipers, becomes a literal man-eating demon.
Megan played Jennifer with a flourish, and the movie became an underground cult success. However, in the mainstream, Jennifer’s Body was highly criticized. Male fans, who understood from the trailer that they were coming to see Megan’s body in a bikini, were disappointed when she started eating boys.
Bad Reviews and Harsh Criticism
In a 2018 article about Jennifer’s Body, Constance Grady wrote that “It was viewed as a sex romp for straight teen boys, and as such, it was a failure.” She explained, “In 2009, Cody was considered a gimmicky one-hit-wonder who was way too precious with her made-up slang, and Fox was considered a vapid Maxim cover girl.”
So, critics trashed the film, writing that “the script was trying too hard; it was too sexualized, or maybe not sexy enough; it was a trashy, empty B-movie with delusions of grandeur.”
A Nightmare to Work For
After thinning down to play a zombie demon in Jennifer’s Body, Megan was asked by Michael Bay to gain ten pounds for her role in Transformers. Megan then told Wonderland magazine that Bay was “a nightmare to work for.”
She explained, “He’s like Napoleon, and he wants to create this insane, infamous mad man reputation. He wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is.” Not surprisingly, Bay and the franchise’s producer Steven Spielberg were fed up with her attitude and fired Fox from Transformers after that.
A Letter From the Crew
After her comments about Bay, three of the director’s self-professed loyal Transformers crew members wrote a letter to the press trashing Fox. They complimented her looks but said she owed Bay her career. They called her “dumb-as-a-rock,” “Ms. Sourpants,” “Ms. Princess,” “disgusting,” “uneducated,” and “ungracious.”
They claimed Megan was the “queen of talking trailer trash” and said, “being a porn star in the future might be a good career option” for her. The anonymous crew members didn’t stop there; they wrote: “Megan really is a thankless, classless, graceless, and shall we say unfriendly b****.”
Blacklisted From Hollywood
After the debasing letter the anonymous crew members wrote about Megan, she was blacklisted from Hollywood. Deadline Magazine posted a full copy of the letter for the whole world to see, and Fox was subsequently dubbed a hard-to-work with, snobbish, stupid b****.
Her time in the limelight was over, and the actress retreated into the shadows. No-one stopped to think if Megan was the victim, if maybe the crew had been hard on her, and perhaps Bay wasn’t the saint they were making him out to be.
A Genuine Psychological Breakdown
Megan told ET, “I think I had a genuine psychological breakdown where I wanted just nothing to do; I didn’t want to be seen. I didn’t want to have to take a photo, do a magazine, walk a carpet.”
She explained, “I didn’t want to be seen in public at all because the fear, and the belief… that I was going to be mocked, or spat at, or someone was going to yell at me, or people would stone me or savage me for just being out… so I went through a very dark moment after that.”
Saved by Motherhood
Meanwhile, out of the limelight, Megan and Brian tied the knot in a private ceremony in 2010. Two years later, they welcomed their first son Noah, and Megan threw herself into motherhood. Bodhi was born in 2014, making Fox a mother of two beautiful boys.
Megan expressed that her children were what made her step back from acting. She finally felt like she had found “purpose.” Furthermore, she’d been looking for an excuse and “needed an escape.” According to Megan, becoming a mother “kind of saved me honestly.”
Filing for Divorce
Despite motherhood being a wonderful experience for Fox, her life wasn’t perfect. Megan and Brian were having problems, and in 2015, she filed for divorce after eleven years of being together. The couple never elaborated on what had happened, only said, “things have been rocky.”
But their separation didn’t last, and in 2016, Fox and Green announced that they were back together and expecting their third child. In 2016, Megan gave birth to Journey, completing their family of six, which included Green’s son Kassius from his previous marriage.
Filing for Divorce Again
In May 2020, Brian and Megan announced that they had split again, and in November of that year, Fox filed for divorce from Green again. They have remained separated since then, and their divorce was finalized in October 2021.
Green shared that Megan was the one who realized that she needed time apart. After a few weeks of filming a movie away from home, she had realized that she felt more like herself and better. Brian admitted that he had been upset but wished her the best.
Opening Up About Taboo Subjects
Over the years, Megan Fox has shocked the press by being overly open about her private life and saying scandalous things for what seems like shock value. Because of this tendency, she gained the reputation of being an attention-seeking maniac, giving all her haters more to hate on.
However, she has also been very open about some critical and taboo subjects. For instance, Megan revealed in 2009 that she has OCD. She confessed, “Playing with my hair is a tic I have. I touch it when I’m nervous and uncomfortable. I get very fidgety.”
Not Super Excited About Her Image
Furthermore, the beautiful, jaw-dropping actress has spoken up a lot about her insecurities. She told Rolling Stone in 2009, “I see what I look like, but there are things that I like and things that I dislike. My hair is good. The color of my eyes is good, obviously — that’s a trait I have.”
Megan continued, “I don’t have things that are hideous. I’m too short. I’m naturally more sturdy. But overall, I’m not super excited about the whole thing.” Fox’s candid attitude regarding her self-image is a reminder that everyone, even “the sexiest woman alive,” has insecurities.
Attracted to Both Sexes
The most provocative subject that the blunt star has breached over the years is her sexuality. Megan has opened up about being bisexual. She explained, “I just think that all humans are born with the ability to be attracted to both sexes. I mean, I could see myself in a relationship with a girl….”
But Megan also called herself a hypocrite and said that she would never sleep with another bisexual woman, “because that means they also sleep with men, and men are so dirty that I’d never want to sleep with a girl who had slept with a man.”
Sensationalized by the Press
Megan has also shared many other things that have shocked her fans. She has said she looks like “a tranny,” that she has “the libido of a 15-year-old boy,” and that she has a deep distrust towards men, who are “weak like puppies.” Megan also recently revealed that she has “body dysmorphia.”
But she expressed how “unbearable” a “lifestyle” having everything she says being “sensationalized” by the press. Most of all, Megan is sick of “being exploited.” She even told Rolling Stone, “I have a sick feeling of being mocked all the time [and] a lot of self-loathing.”
A Ridiculously Bad Temper
Megan delved deep into the struggle she faced growing up, revealing her “ridiculously-bad” temper that resulted in “panic attacks that manifested themselves as violent, rageful temper tantrums. Like where I didn’t know how to control myself or what to do.” She also hinted at periods of cutting herself and suffering from an eating disorder.
Fox revealed that just a couple of years before starring alongside the Olson twins in Holiday in the Sun, she was caught stealing Mary-Kate and Ashley cosmetics from Walmart and has a lifetime ban from the store.
Stares and Attention From Men
Megan was sexualized from a young age and has been hated on and exploited because of her looks. But she’s learned a lot over the years: “I was 12 when I first started getting a lot of stares and attention from grown men, and for a while, I misused that power….”
“But it’s not empowering. It’s the opposite. It’s taking power away from you. I was like Jennifer in [Jennifer’s Body]. She’s just so lost in her sexuality. What you do is harness your sexuality and use it to control your destiny.”
Not Accepted by Other Women
Megan recently shared, “I was so lost and trying to understand, like, how am I supposed to feel value or find purpose in this horrendous, patriarchal, misogynistic hell that was Hollywood at the time? I had already been speaking out against it and everyone, including other women, received me in a very negative way for doing it.”
She has revealed her battles with feeling like an outsider and how she wasn’t included in the #MeToo movement, despite all she has been through. Megan feels that she has been rejected by feminists and was afraid she would be victim shamed.
A Serial Monogamist
Megan revealed to Rolling Stone that during her marriage to Green, while they were separated, “she hooked up with Transformers’ costar Shia LaBeouf,” though she admitted it was never serious. According to Megan, they did love each other, “I can never have sex with someone that I don’t love, ever, ever, ever.”
Megan shared that the idea of a one-night stand makes her sick, and she would be terrified and not enjoy it. “I’m not sexually promiscuous… I’m a serial monogamist. There’s nothing about being single that I enjoy.”
Her Many Tattoos
Megan is also known for her many tattoos, which is also why she has been compared so often to Angelina Jolie. Sometimes her revelations about her ink have been less than proper, such as saying her bf’s name is tattooed “next to my pie.”
However, most of Megan’s tattoos are less provocative. She has a Shakespeare quote on her shoulder, a Chinese symbol on her neck, a Friedrich Nietzsche quote on her ribs next to a poem she wrote herself, a crescent moon and star on her ankle, and a yin-yang on her inner wrist.
Removing Marilyn Monroe
One tattoo that Megan used to have of Marilyn Monroe on her forearm has disappeared. She explained that she got the tattoo removed in 2011 because of the tragedy Monroe represents for her. “I’m removing it. She was a negative person; she was disturbed… I do not want to attract this kind of negative energy in my life.”
Although Marilyn was Fox’s idol, she decided that Monroe’s hardships were something she didn’t want to visualize for herself. Megan explained, “[Marilyn] had all the potential in the world, and it was squandered. I’m not interested in following in those footsteps.”
Reconciled With Michael Bay
From 2010 until her resurgence in 2019, Megan only appeared in a handful of films, mostly in supporting roles. Between 2011 and 2013, she acted in Friends with Kids, Judd Apatow’s This Is 40, and alongside Sasha Baron Cohen in The Dictator. But in 2014, something changed…
Megan reconciled with the man she’d actually called a dictator, Michael Bay. They put their differences aside, and she appeared as April O’Neil in the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise before taking a break from the big screen until 2019.
Appearing in New Girl
But that didn’t mean she wasn’t acting. Megan scored the role of Reagan Lucas on the sitcom New Girl, appearing on the show from 2016 to 2017. Reagan sublets a room in Jess’s (Zooey Deschanel) apartment and, to everyone’s surprise, starts seeing her ex, Nick (Jake Johnson).
Megan admitted to The Washington Post that “Reagan was the one closest to her personality” out of every part she’s played. “People were surprised that I was funny at all,” joked Fox. On New Girl, Megan proved she has more versatile acting chops than people believed.
Joan of Arc and Britney Spears
More recently, fans and publications have been standing up for Megan Fox and admitting that she was wronged by Hollywood and the media. Megan shared that she always believed this would happen but thought it might be after she was dead.
Fox expressed, “I felt like I was connected to Joan of Arc and all of these women who’ve been persecuted all throughout time.” Furthermore, the apology towards Fox has been partially attributed to the #FreeBritney movement, which likewise unveiled the unfair treatment of female stars by the media.
Midnight in the Switchgrass
In 2019, Fox’s career began to pick back up again. She explained that she has been more intentional about the roles she chooses: “I always choose things just based on feeling… I feel like… something about it is going to be significant for my life.” Megan appeared in three films in 2019 and two in 2020.
This year she acted in Till Death, Night Teeth, and in Midnight in the Switchgrass. While filming Midnight in the Switchgrass, she met her current boyfriend, Colson Baker, aka Machine Gun Kelly, who starred opposite her.
All Written in the Stars
Megan is a big believer in astrology and knew she would have a creative resurgence in her thirties. She thinks that her fate is written in the stars and that everything happens for a reason. Known to start her day by reading her horoscope and doing tarot cards, Megan sees herself as a very spiritual person.
She revealed that one night after creating a crystal-filled temple in her room, she had an epiphany and promised herself never to live her life from fear again. After that, everything changed; she got divorced and met Machine Gun Kelly. Maybe it was fate.
His Bloody Valentine
After filming side by side in March 2020, Colson and Megan went public with their relationship in June of that year and began sharing their love on social media. Around the same time, Megan appeared alongside Machine Gun Kelly in the steamy music video for his song “Bloody Valentine,” fueling rumors of their romance further.
Megan shared that Colson is her “twin flame,” meaning that they are “actually two halves of the same soul” that has “ascended to a high enough level that it can be split into two different bodies at the same time.”
Public Displays of Affection
Nowadays, a little over a year after the two began seeing each other, they are considered Hollywood’s latest power couple. Fox and Kelly’s relationship is full of PDA, which keeps them constantly trending, but some people find it off-putting.
It reminds us of Megan’s predecessor, Angelina Jolie’s marriage to Billy Bob Thornton. Machine Gun Kelly even revealed that he wears a drop of Megan’s blood around his neck, just like Angelina and Billy Bob used to. They have also become known for their exciting way of explaining their love for one another.
“You Smell Like Weed”
Megan shared that they met once a few years earlier at a party in LA before starring opposite each other. She said, “This weird thing happened; we didn’t see each other… I just remember this tall, blond, ghostly creature, and I looked up, and I was like, ‘You smell like weed.’”
Apparently, Machine Gun Kelly answered, “I am weed,” and then disappeared “like a ninja in a smoke bomb.” The next time they met, Colson told her, “I’m lost,” and Megan answered, “Well, let’s find you.” Their odd and poetic dialogues didn’t end there.
“A Tsunami or a Forest Fire”
They have compared their love to many things, like “Finding someone that can take you out of the fast lane and make sure that you’re safe, because at any minute you can crash,” or “loving him is like being in love with a tsunami or a forest fire.”
They believe what they have together is a “once in a lifetime thing,” a love affair of “mythic proportions.” When describing their first kiss, Colson said, “she wouldn’t kiss me. We just put our lips right in front of each other and breathed each other’s breath, and then she just left.”
Double Dates With Kourtney and Travis
Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly have teamed up with another It Couple: Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker. Together, the two duos go on double dates and have been seen out and about on the Sunset Strip. They are all about bringing back the glam to rock and roll.
Megan and Kourtney have referred to the two musicians as their “future baby daddies” and seem to be loving their fun, new friendship. They have been dubbed the latest additions to a tradition of cool, badass rockstar girlfriends.
Co-Parenting Their Kids
Megan and Brian have shared that they currently co-parent their children. But nevertheless, Megan is often pestered by questions from the press regarding the whereabouts of her kids while she is out with Colson. Fox doesn’t understand why they ask her but not Brian or Colson, who has an 11-year-old daughter.
She is sick of being mom-shamed and made out to be a bad parent for having fun and letting her sons spend time with their other parent. Megan explained that she does everything she can to protect her “babies.”
Their Age Difference
Despite what most people assume, Megan and Machine Gun Kelly are actually only four years apart in age; she is 35, and he is 31. However, they have endured criticism about their age gap, most likely because, as Megan says, “he’s lived like he’s nineteen his whole life, but he isn’t nineteen.”
Both halves of this explosive power couple are in their thirties, and both have children from previous relationships. As their relationship has gotten more serious, both parties have been introduced to the other’s kids. But it is yet unknown whether Colson’s daughter Cassie has met Noah, Bodhi, and Journey Green.
They Got Matching Tattoos
A new tattoo Megan got in 2020 has been reported to be inspired by Machine Gun Kelly. The ink is on her collarbone and reads “el pistolero,” which means gunman in Spanish and is apparently his nickname for her. Colson reportedly has Fox’s initials tattooed on himself.
In 2021, while being interviewed by GQ magazine, Megan and Colson got matching tattoos that say “The darkest fairytale.” They haven’t explained the tattoo’s meaning, but we guess they are referring to their crazy, stupid love for each other.
NEWEST UPDATE: As of early January, Megan and MGK are engaged!
Megan Is Owning Herself
Finally, Megan Fox has really begun to own herself. The star knows that she doesn’t always fit neatly into the boxes people expect her to and is “an unusual person.” But meeting Colson Baker was like meeting her “soul’s reflection,” and it helped her understand that she had locked away a part of herself.
She told InStyle, “I had this incredible breakthrough, and I realized that I had been living in a self-imposed prison for so long because I let other people tell me who I was or what I wasn’t. I hid because I was hurt.”
Her Upcoming Career Goals
Fox is also ready to grow into herself as an actress. She wants to take on fun, interesting, and challenging roles and hopes to star in a Marvel or DC film because of her love for comics. Furthermore, Megan hinted that she would love to do a Jennifer’s Body sequel.
To the delight of her fans, many upcoming films are starring Megan Fox. Among them is Brian Petsos’ movie Big Gold Brick. Other projects Fox is rumored to be involved with are Good Mourning with a U, The Expendables 4, and Johnny & Clyde.
Like a Phoenix From the Ashes
Regarding her current career renaissance and rise again to the spotlight, Megan Fox told InStyle, “It is a little bit like being a phoenix, like being resurrected from the ashes.” She explained that she had felt as if Hollywood and the media had stoned her to death at one point but later regretted doing so.
Luckily, the drop-dead gorgeous actress doesn’t rely on validation from other people anymore. She knows who she is and knows that she was wronged but no longer needs an apology. Megan Fox is back.
