Kevin Michael Costner was born on January 18, 1955, in California. The youngest son in a modest family living in Compton, little did his parents know that he would grow up to be one of Hollywood’s – if not the world’s – most notorious bachelors. When he married his college sweetheart at just 20 years old, it seemed as though he was set for life, especially following the arrival of their three children. But that was not to be – instead; it was just the beginning of a tumultuous love life that spanned across decades.
As Costner shot to fame, the steady path he had embarked on with his first wife veered swiftly and sharply off course, and it wasn’t long before he had gained a reputation as a “womanizer.” In this article, we document the long list – and it really is long – of beautiful, smart, and successful women that Costner has been affiliated with during the course of his life and exactly what – and who – caused him to leave that lifestyle in the past.
A Too-Good-to-Be-True College Sweetheart
Hollywood star and global heart-throb Kevin Costner’s love life started with Cindy Silva, who he met at California State University, Fullerton. She was a beautiful girl who was nominated for homecoming queen and also played Snow White at Disneyland, and Costner fell for her while they studied together in 1975. Three years later, in 1978, the couple married. Costner was just 20 years old at the time.
Over a decade later, in an interview in 1989, Costner said of Silva: “She was beautiful, she was sweet, she was smarter than me. She represented everything about women that I like.” The young but happy couple had three children together: Annie, Lily, and Joe. Unfortunately, however, the wedded bliss was not to last.
Proud to Be Together?
Looking at Costner and Silva’s marriage from the outside, it seemed as though it was perfect and that the relationship was indestructible. The couple even owned a joint racehorse called “Proudtobetogether,” which made a statement, to say the least. Costner seemed to be a caring, loving, and honest husband – and for a while, there was no reason to think otherwise.
That is, until 1987 when Costner was quoted as saying: “I have a big thirst. A big taste for things … I hate the fact that I’ve lived by somebody else’s rules, and I’ve somehow missed out on something.” Many took this as a not-so-subtle hint that he was not completely happy in his marriage and felt somewhat unsatisfied. Fans were disappointed that it seemed to contradict the straight-shooter image of Costner that they loved.
The Marriage Comes to an End
Although the couple had enough on their plates with their three children, Costner and Silva worked together in South Dakota to create the critically acclaimed film “Dances with Wolves” – the Hollywood blockbuster movie that won six Oscars. While Costner worked on the set and in front of the camera, Silva worked as a stage manager – but she was also known for boosting morale by hosting parties.
However, it wasn’t long before rumors of Costner’s infidelity began hitting the tabloids. Although the couple initially stayed together, it eventually became too much. Their divorce statement read: “After 16 years together, we are ending our marriage. We have amicably resolved all issues regarding our children and financial affairs, and a full marital settlement has been reached.” In 1994, the divorce was final.
The Final Nail in the Coffin
Costner had suggested that divorce was on the cards during an interview with the Daily News, saying: “The temptations are pretty strong – and there’s a hungry world out there waiting for you to fall. So, you can’t even dabble without paying a huge price. I try to conduct my life with a certain amount of dignity and discretion – but marriage is a hard, hard gig.”
Undoubtedly, marriage is difficult – but “dabbling” in extra-marital affairs is a sure-fire way of putting the final nail in the coffin. Costner began to gain a reputation of being a man who came onto any woman he felt attracted to, almost instinctively. He even alluded to this himself during an interview with People magazine in 1989: “The package isn’t important. I have a real appreciation for women.”
An Affair to Remember
After divorcing from Silva, Costner went on to have a brief affair with Bridget Rooney, who was described by Parade as a Pittsburgh Steelers heiress. She fell pregnant and claimed the baby was Costner’s – however, allegedly, he demanded a paternity test before he accepted the baby boy, born in 1996 and named Liam, as his own. Rooney consented, and the results revealed Liam was, in fact, Costner’s son.
Despite the rocky start to their father-son relationship, Costner later set up a trust fund in Liam’s name after the results of the paternity test were revealed. According to a source who spoke to People magazine, Costner saw Liam “occasionally but not on a regular basis.” By now, at age 41, Costner had four children.
Free from the Constraints of Marriage
Costner was now free from his 16-year marriage and living his life as a bachelor – and it’s safe to say that he lived it to the maximum. However, there were more rumors circulating of extra-marital affairs that took place during his marriage to Silva. One of the most significant – although unconfirmed – was supposedly with actress Halle Berry, in 1989.
When the affair was said to have taken place, Berry was just establishing herself as an actress, starring in 12 episodes of “Living Dolls.” Costner, meanwhile, was in the middle of starring in “Field of Dreams” while still enjoying the stardom that came with the huge success of “Dances with Wolves,” Although neither Costner nor Berry have ever confirmed the rumors, they are still friends to this day.
Liaisons with Another Actress
Risking more tabloid exposure while he was still married to Silva, Costner allegedly put a lot of effort into wooing Michelle Pfeiffer, an actress that is most famous for her roles in “Scarface,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” and “What Lies Beneath,” among other blockbuster movies. It seemed as though Costner simply couldn’t resist an attractive, successful woman.
Although the affair between Costner and Pfieffer was unconfirmed, we do know that Costner was determined to play Pfieffer’s love interest in the Italian love story “Taming Ben Taylor.” Perhaps it would have provided him with an opportunity to get closer to her. Unfortunately for him, however, the film never made it out of production. Still, the rumors continued, encouraged by frequent tabloid reports.
The Rocker Boy Strikes Again
Beauty pageant Bobbie Jean Brown’s claim to fame, besides dating Tommy Lee, was starring in Warrant’s “Cherry Pie” music video, a popular 80s song. After Tommy Lee broke up with her to marry Pamela Anderson, Brown had a number of relationships that she details in her tell-all memoir, Dirty Rocker Boys: Love and Lust on the Sunset Strip.
One of those “rocker boys” – which, by now, will probably come as no surprise – was Kevin Costner. However, despite confirming that they went on a string of dates, Brown revealed in her memoir that they did not end up having a physical relationship, as she threw a lit cigarette into his bedroom and almost burned down his entire house!
Once Upon a Star
It wasn’t just Bobbie Jean Brown that mentioned Costner in a memoir, though. No, he got around much more than that. TV and movie star Peggy Trentini, who also modeled for Playboy, also became involved with Costner in the 1990s, just after he separated from Silva. She later said of Costner: “He was so fun and flirty, but I never took him seriously because my friends all told me he was a huge womanizer.”
In Trentini’s 2012 memoir, Once Upon a Star: Celebrity Kiss and Tell Stories, she claims that Costner would get his friends to bring multiple women to his house so he could “find a hot girlfriend.” Clearly, it didn’t work out between the two, and they went their separate ways.
Another Mighty Affair Rumor
In 1995, Woody Allen’s romantic comedy “Mighty Aphrodite” caught Costner’s attention. Well, it was actually Mira Sorvino’s award-winning portrayal of a carefree prostitute called Linda Ash that drew him in, and he couldn’t resist trying to get closer to her. Seemingly able to detect an up-and-coming Hollywood starlet, Costner dated Sorvino during her rise to fame.
This was in 1993, which was a year before Costner and Silva’s divorce was finalized. As you can probably guess, the tabloids were all over the romance and seemingly couldn’t get enough of writing about Costner and his love life. His relationship with Sorvino was not long-lived, though – and it wasn’t long before Costner went back to his bachelor lifestyle.
Revealing all on the Radio
Holly Sampson, a model, and actress best known for her appearances in “The Wonder Years,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Matlock,” also claims that she had a relationship with Costner in 1994 – albeit brief. She made her reveal in May 2009 while on an internet radio show – and also named Tiger Woods as an ex-lover, which caused quite a stir.
After her relationship with Costner, Sampson’s career went on a slightly different trajectory. In 1996, she starred in “Other Men’s Wives,” and, in 2001, she played a role in “Pretty Cool” that has been described as “mainstream porn.” However, most notable is her involvement in the adult film industry in 1998, under aliases such as “Nicolette.” Maybe Costner had something to do with this transformation – we’ll never know.
An Eye for a Supermodel
After Costner and Sampson’s relationship ended, it wasn’t long before rumors about an affair with another beautiful woman started up. After all, his divorce had been finalized, so he was officially a free man – and he was determined to make the most of it. This time, in the mid-1990s, the rumors revolved around British supermodel Naomi Campbell.
She began her career at just 15 years old and quickly shot to fame, becoming a household name around the world. As a result, at the time she met Costner, Campbell was one of the biggest names in modeling, so her love life did not go unnoticed by the media. Neither Costner nor Campbell ever confirmed or denied their relationship, so it’s unclear how long it actually lasted for – but it seems as though it was fairly brief.
The List of Lovers Gets Longer
Another rumor, another fling – Costner’s list of past lovers just keeps getting longer and longer. This time, during the mid-1990s, the rumors were surrounding Karin Reznack, an actress best known for starring in “Clara’s Heart” in 1988 and “Her Alibi” in 1989. She was also a screenwriter and production assistant, working as Martin Efland’s assistant during the production of “Clara’s Heart.”
As neither party ever confirmed nor denied the relationship, we know very little about it. In fact, we’re not even sure when it occurred or how long it lasted. However, we know that Reznack married well-known film director John Bryum in the late 1990s, so her affair with Costner is likely to have been well and truly over by then.
“He’d Never Be So Vulgar”
Costner’s next entry in his long list of lovers was Brigit Cunningham, a Rutgers graduate, event organizer, Green Party activist, and child rights organizer. She had been married before she met Costner, but it had only lasted for three months. When she met Costner in the late 1990s, they immediately clicked and were soon in a relationship.
They were together for three years, but the relationship ended when she had to go into recovery for alcoholism. However, their friendship stayed strong – in 2006, when Costner was embroiled in a lewd behavior scandal stemming from a massage that he received at a five-star hotel in 2004. Cunningham came to his rescue, releasing a statement that said: “Kevin is very romantic and tender, he would never do anything so vulgar … He really is Mr. Perfect, squeaky clean, if a little naïve when it comes to realizing the effect he has on girls.”
Sparking Speculation with the 98th Sexiest Woman
Rumor has it that Costner also spent a fair amount of time with Angie Everhart, who was ranked as the 98th sexiest woman in the FHM 100 Sexiest Women of 2003. She was also a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, but she made her Hollywood debut with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie “Last Action Hero.”
In 1995, Costner and Everhart found themselves in the tabloids when they were spotted having a dinner date, which sparked a lot of speculation. Unfortunately, this came straight after rumors began circulating that Costner and his ex-wife Cindy Silva were attempting to reconcile after their divorce. The Costner-Everhart fling did not last long, and soon after, she married comedian and singer-songwriter, Ashley Hamilton.
Courteney Cox – Just a Friend?
Yet another famous female name that can be romantically linked to Kevin Costner in the 1990s is Courteney Cox, who played the character of Monica on the hit US sitcom “Friends.” Their alleged fling was back in 1995 – which seems to have been a pretty busy year for Costner as he made the most of being single!
Unfortunately, not much is known about this relationship, as both Costner and Cox were very secretive and kept any dates they may have had under wraps. However, Cox married David Arquette in 1999, so it was over by then. Costner and Cox reunited in 2001, but this time only on the big screen, when they co-starred in action-adventure crime movie “3,000 Miles to Graceland.”
Another Supermodel to Add to the List
You may remember Cheryl Tiegs, the American model whose success in the modeling world invented the entire concept of the “supermodel.” From this success came a line of signature brand sportswear that proved to be very popular. Meanwhile, she graced the covers of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, as well as Time magazine. Obviously, Costner found her totally irresistible.
Although it’s surprising that he had any time left, during 1995, Costner romantically rendezvoused with the supermodel – although, again, there are not many confirmed details about the relationship. Like most of the others, though, it was relatively short-lived. Costner was seemingly unable to find anyone that he really wanted to settle down with.
Cal Ripken’s Fateful Failure to Start
Controversy erupted in 1997 when baseball player Cal Ripken, who was a close friend of Costner’s, allegedly had a breakdown that prevented him from starting the game that night, as he had done consecutively for over five years. To help preserve his record, a Baltimore Orioles employee orchestrated a lighting malfunction – either that, or it happened coincidentally. Regardless, the outcome was that the game was canceled.
Rumor has it that Ripken returned to his house to find Costner in his bed with his wife, Kelly, who obviously hadn’t expected him back for a while. Ripken allegedly beat Costner up so badly as a result that he was unable to do any publicity – just when he was wrapping up filming of “The Postman” and should have been promoting it.
Good Morning Joan Lunden
At the peak of his fame in the mid-1990s, Costner found a new friend in Joan Lunden, ABC’s popular “Good Morning America” host who manned the desk until 1997. His new relationship with the American journalist, author, and TV host was a hot story in the media, and with “Waterworld” promotion coinciding, the publicity proved to be too much and was eventually the cause of the relationship’s breakdown.
“I think Kevin and I would have dated longer had it not been for the unbelievable press focus on us,” Lunden said years later. However, according to her, Costner was lavish in his romancing efforts while they were together. She recalls: “He got this yacht and we sailed around New York Harbor and had dinner. It was quite romantic and quite beautiful.”
A Seemingly New Start
1996 came around – a new year and, for Costner, a new lifestyle, when he started dating Australian model Elle Macpherson. Costner was charmed by the beautiful model, actress, businesswoman, and TV host, and their relationship became quite serious fairly quickly. It was an unusual territory for him, after his long list of quick affairs and flings. Could Costner be giving up the bachelor’s life forever?
Costner was public about his strong feelings for Macpherson, gushing in one interview: “I feel I have met my equal with this beautiful, talented, funny, and lovely person.” Within months, the couple had moved in together. The single lifestyle had officially given way to domestic stability – although, unfortunately, it ended up being short-lived. The couple had split by the end of the year.
France’s First Lady Puts a Spanner in the Works
Rumors had circulated that Costner was seeing other women behind Macpherson’s back, and that seems to have been the cause of their relationship breaking down. Just as it seemed as though Costner was ready to settle down again – and even possibly tie the knot for the second time – he slipped right back into bachelorhood. It was as though he never left.
This time, his love affair was with Italian-French supermodel and pop singer Carla Bruni, known as France’s First Lady after dating French president Nicolas Sarkozy. She too succumbed to Costner’s charm and good looks, but – perhaps unsurprisingly, by now – their relationship didn’t last. However, some of Bruni’s ex-boyfriends were Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, so Costner was in good company, at least.
Secret Liaisons with Miss America
In the 1990s, two extremely successful films boosted Costner’s fame even further. He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his outstanding performance in “Tin Cup” in 1996, as well as for a Saturn Award for his 1997 movie “The Postman.” But the good luck didn’t stop there – and it didn’t just focus on his professional career, either.
In 1997, Costner met American news anchor Tawny Little. He clearly took a liking to her, as he dated the Miss America pageant winner secretly throughout 1997 and 1998. However, not much has been revealed about their relationship. Interestingly, Costner wasn’t the first celeb Little dated. She had relationships with Ron Silver and Burt Reynolds too – a pretty impressive track record if you ask us!
Travolta’s Fury at Costner Rumors
That takes us to 1999 when Costner was filming for “For the Love of the Game.” This time, however, it wasn’t a baseball player that he crossed; it was an actor colleague – namely, John Travolta. He was married to Kelly Preston at the time, who was co-starring with Costner. As always, it wasn’t long before rumors of an affair began to circulate around the industry and in the media.
Although only for a brief period, the tabloids went wild and claimed that Costner and Preston’s romance spilled from the on-set storyline into more intimate, private places offscreen. As a follow-up, National Enquirer published a story claiming that Travolta was “furious” with the pair and the situation. However, neither Costner nor Preston addressed the allegations – and meanwhile, Travolta and Preston remained married.
A Woman from the Past
As always, it didn’t take long for Costner to find a new girlfriend. The lady in question was Christine Baumgartner, a model and handbag designer. They initially met in the late 1980s, while Costner was practicing golf for his role in “Tin Cup.” However, at the time, Costner was married to Silva, and Baumgartner, who was born in 1974, was a teenager.
Fast-forward to 1998, when Costner and Baumgartner ran into each other again – but this time, Costner was single, and Baumgartner was an adult, albeit 20 years his junior. The romance that blossomed caught Costner off guard: “When I met Christine, I wasn’t prepared to be in love again. It took me a long time before I said, ‘I love you’ to her – a long time.”
A New Start – But Will it Last?
After a lengthy stint as a bachelor, Costner was unprepared for how he felt in this relationship, but realized it was different to the ones before: “When I wanted some company in my life, I was like the classic single guy – who do I love this week, who next week? I wouldn’t even use the word ‘love’ with someone, because that makes things trickier.”
However, no relationship is without its challenges, and this one was no different. In 2002, four years after they began dating, they separated due to wanting different things out of the relationship. Baumgartner, being just 33 at the time with no children, wanted to start a family with Costner. He, however, already had four children and didn’t want any more.
Deciding What to Do
It seemed as though Costner was finally ready for love again, but not family and commitment. “Fear kept me from marrying Christine,” Costner said. “[She] wanted a child, but I was afraid I couldn’t be an effective father. But, instead of reverting back to his old bachelor ways, he worked out his priorities in time and saved their relationship.
After being single again after four years, Costner had a stark realization. Referring to his thought processes at the time, he later said: “Am I going to lose a beautiful woman who is willing to be with me to my very last breath because I am afraid to say yes to a child? That’s all it took.”
A Reconciliation and an Engagement
Costner and Baumgartner reconciled and got engaged in 2003. One year later, on 25 September 2004, they married at Costner’s incredible 165-acre Colorado estate just outside of Aspen. Costner arrived in a covered wagon, Baumgartner, in a restored vintage green pickup truck. They then exchanged vows next to a stream, joined by guests such as Tim Allen, Mary McDonnell, and Don Johnson.
Their guest list included 300 of their closest friends and family members. For Baumgartner, it was the first time she said, “I do,” – and although it was Costner’s second, it was to be his last. Despite his previous infidelity, it seemed as though this marriage was built to stand the test of time. Friend David Giammarco affirmed this, saying that Costner and Baumgartner are “like kids together, really in love.”
Leaving the Bachelor Life Behind
The couple had agreed to start a family together, but they waited three years to do so. In May 2007, they welcomed their first son, Cayden. Costner took some time off acting to help his wife out at home and take care of his son. His work shifted from time-demanding film projects to follow-up, side projects, such as investing in a centrifuge machine.
He also toured with his country-rock band Modern West, but it looked like he had dropped out of the Hollywood movie scene completely. He had certainly left his tabloid-attracting bachelor lifestyle behind, and for once, there were no rumors about his extra-marital affairs circulating. His role as a father was, once again, his main focus.
Seven Is the Magic Number
In 2009, Costner and Baumgartner had a second child – another boy, who they named Hayes. A year later, in 2010, their daughter Grace was born. Family life treated the couple well, with Costner sharing his perspective in 2011: “They’re really good children, and I see them making steps every day, and the one thing I pray for in life is not success but being able to raise my children, and that nothing happens to me in the next 20 years.”
Although his first three children from his marriage to Cindy Silva were adults by the time his final three children were born, and his son Liam by Bridget Rooney was a teenager, Costner was now father to seven children. Although the fact that they have three different mothers may seem a lot to some people, considering his wild single days, it could be said that it’s surprising he only had one child out of wedlock. Either way, seven children is a lot for anyone.
A New Focus in Life
Being an older father is slightly different from being a young father. Having young children when you’re in your 60s provides food for thought, according to Costner, who said: “I want it to be me who tells them about the secrets, the beauty, the treachery and everything that is in life. I don’t want them to learn from someone else.”
His sentiments reveal his commitment to family – a true sign that he has completely reformed from his bachelor days. It really does seem as though he’s left them firmly in the past and that he’s focusing on the future with his family. And, despite having initial reservations, it seems as though his decision to have children with Baumgartner was the right one.
Getting Back a Recovered Reputation
How things have changed! Instead of bragging about his dating track record and his relationships with beautiful women, Costner is now most proud of his children’s accomplishments . He revealed this unusually sentimental side of himself in a 2007 interview with Good Housekeeping, in which he said he doesn’t pick favorites but that “[I’ve] always been really close to my girls.”
“All of my kids are showered with love,” Costner went on to claim, which suggests that fatherhood comes as naturally to him as acting. It would seem as though his children are his greatest achievement and main focus in life – and, as a result, he’s finally got his squeaky-clean reputation back after losing it during his first marriage.
Hollywood Is Beckoning Him Back
Family life is a huge commitment, but even Hollywood actors need to keep active and pay the bills. And, as the children get older, it becomes easier to get back to work. That’s exactly what Costner did in 2013 when he took the role of Jonathan Kent in the movie “Man of Steel.” But that wasn’t a decision that was easy for him to make.
“I won’t make a movie unless I have the ability to do it the way I want, so I hold my breath for a very long time,” Costner said at the time. “At this point in my life, I don’t want to make a movie I don’t want to make or one that somehow gets manipulated in a way I don’t feel comfortable with.” With his success, he can afford to be picky.
Playing Two Roles in Life
While making movies has undoubtedly been fulfilling for Costner, and he has had huge success as both an actor and a producer, fatherhood has brought him equal fulfillment. In his words, “Movies are magic, and they’ve always been magic to me. You get to play heroes in the movies, but there’s a moment in time where you’re just a father, and you get to go home.”
He continued to say: “I have played two roles in my life, one I get paid to do, which is the movies, and the other one is being a father, for which I’ll be rewarded my whole life.” A beautiful sentiment indeed – and a far cry from the insatiable Kevin Costner of the 1990s.
A Happy Ending to the Love Story
Costner had finally got his happy ending – and he was, for once, content. Reflecting on his tumultuous first marriage and bumpy love life afterward, he said: “I have never wanted to be afraid in my life, but after my divorce, I was. The pain of that experience had been so strong that I never wanted to go through it ever again.”
But the experience taught him a lesson. “Sometimes, you learn the thing you’re most afraid of will save your life,” Costner mused. And, having now been happily married to his wife for 15 years – with three beautiful children together – it’s safe to say that Baumgartner did, indeed, save his life – or at least, straightened out his love life. We wish them nothing but happiness.
