Otherworldly Facts About Outer Space That Will Blow Your Mind And Chill Your Spine

A Whole Lot Of Hydration

Let’s imagine you get sent off in a spaceship to live for a year among the stars. To stay alive, you’d have to drink around 730 liters of recycled water that has already passed through your own body. This means you’d be drinking your own sweat and urine over and over again! This just goes to show what valuable resource water really is.

A Creepy Way To Sleep

If you go to sleep in zero gravity, your arms can simply float around in every direction. This means that you when you wake up, your arms or hands might be right in front of your face, which is quite scary for astronauts as it looks like someone is trying to grab them as they open their eyes.

The Dark Flow Is Coming For All Of Us

Scientists say that there’s an unknown force called the ‘Dark Flow’ which is basically eating away at the galaxy, making huge parts of it just vanish into nothingness. Some experts believe that the Dark Flow will eventually wipe out our own solar system, but it shouldn’t happen for many, many, many more years.

We’re All Super Fast

It might sound strange, but you’re technically moving at 1.9 million miles an hour right now. That’s the speed at which the Earth travels, so everything on it is also traveling at the same speed through space. Just for reference, if you could run at a speed of 1.9 million miles an hour, you’d be able to run around the whole planet in about 5 seconds.

Earth 2 Actually Exists

Earth 2 is an idea that might sound like it comes from a comic book or a science-fiction movie, but it has some basis in reality. Twenty light years away, there’s a planet called Gliese 581g which has the same basic properties as Earth and might be home to various lifeforms, but it apparently has super extreme temperatures and a bright red sky!

A Fire From Water

It sounds impossible, but in space, it’s actually possible for a fire to start from water! Back in 2014, a team of scientific experts ran an experiment on a special kind of hot, compressed water. When they mixed this water with organic matter, it created a very harmful kind of fiery gas.

Alien Life Might Not Be So Far Away

There are countless planets out there, and billions of them are floating around not all that far away from Earth! In fact, our planet is technically close to billions of rogue planets than it is to the nearest star, and there’s always a possibility that alien lifeforms could be living on those planets.

A Trip To Space Could Wreck Your Eyesight

Many people would love to have a trip into space, but you might want to think twice when you hear about all the potential health risks! A flight into space can result in your eyes swelling up and ruining your vision, resulting in some people requiring glasses to see properly when they get back home.

Poop Bounces In Space

Due to the unique diet eaten by astronauts in space, their fecal matter is very different from how it would be down on Earth. The crew of Apollo 11 discovered this fact to their shock and dismay when the toilet container on their shuttle broke apart, sending bouncy pieces of poop all around the room!

Space Stinks Really Bad

Here’s another odd fact about space that you would never have guessed! Space is apparently very smelly, with its odor being compared to all kinds of funny things like rotten eggs, raspberries, rum, and hot metal. Some of those smells don’t sound too bad, but when you start mixing them up, it’s definitely not a pleasant scent.

Life As We Know It Is Doomed

Scientists state that billions of years in the future, the universe might actually explode. That sounds insane, but it’s certainly a possibility. Fortunately, we’re all lucky enough to live at a time when the Earth is relatively safe, but it will all be destroyed one day. Even our sun is eventually going to die like every other star.

Meteors Could Strike At Any Moment

Many people fear that a meteor could strike Earth like it did many years ago when it wiped out the dinosaurs. The truth is that the chances of major meteor strikes are low, but there is still a very real possibility of this happening. A meteor recently landed in Russia and caused a lot of damage to the local area, leaving hundreds of people injured.

Galactic Cannibalism Is A Thing

It sounds like the name of a bad B-Movie, but galactic cannibalism is an actual scientific term. This is when big galaxies effectively ‘eat’ smaller ones, absorbing their matter and becoming one big galaxy as a result. There’s a chance this could happen to our very own Milky Way one day, but it shouldn’t happen for a very, very long time.

Astronauts Are Always In Danger

Being an astronaut requires a whole lot of bravery. Back in 2013, an astronaut named Luca Parmitano nearly drowned when his suit sprung a leak and started spilling water inside, all over his body. He could have drowned if he’d stayed in there any longer, but his fellow crew members helped to save him.

Time Flies In Space

Time actually moves faster on our planet than it does in space. It was Albert Einstein himself who actually discovered and proved this fact, many years before space travel was even a real thing. Living on Earth effectively gives us an extra second of time each week than if we were in space.
